One Year!!

I cannot believe it’s been one year since I started The Em Alexander! This time has just flown by. I remember sitting here on my couch with Josh next to me as we anxiously pushed Publish on the very first post. This past year has been an amazing journey of building this blog into what it is now, and what it will become years from now. Though it can be challenging at times, I absolutely love what I am doing, both in my full time job and on this blog.

The main thing I want to do today is say a huge thank you to each of you who take time out of your day to stop by my little space on the internet! I wouldn’t be here doing this if it wasn’t for you – thank you! As I look ahead to year two, I would love to hear from you about what types of posts you want to see. When I started this last year I had more hair tutorials, lifestyle, and beauty posts, but then I fell into a groove of fashion based posts. If you guys are enjoying these posts, or if you want to see some more variety please leave a comment below. When it comes down to it this page is really my creative outlet to bring you guys something fun and inspirational to read each week so I want to bring you things you enjoy.

Speaking of things we enjoy, I have always loved twirling around in a tulle skirt or dress! When I was little I insisted on wearing this gold lamé dress with a white tulle skirt with gold polka dot and piping detail as much as I possibly could. On picture day at pre-school I wore that with a fire engine red cow girl belt with a huge belt buckle – I was taking fashion risks from a young age haha. Now that I have grown up, so have my tulle skirts. To celebrate my first year of blogging I teamed up with the amazing Olivia Rose. Since the opening of their darling boutique store in Milton I have been constantly ooohhh-ing and aaahhh-ing over the gorgeous skirts and dresses. Whether you have a daughter or just want to play dress up yourself, you need to check this store out! If you don’t live in the Halton region you can shop the store online, or you can find their dresses for babies and toddlers in Indigo. I sure hope I have a daughter one day so we can get the adorable mommy and me outfits!

Thanks again for visiting! I so appreciate each of you.

White Pineapple Top (old) – similar white eyelet top & similar white lace top | Distressed Denim | Heeled Micro-suede Mules | Aviators | Chandelier Earrings

You’ve probably noticed by now that I am obsessed with these mules, they are so perfect for spring through fall (I would say winter but it happens to snow here) with their mid-rise heel and soft micro-suede top they are incredibly comfortable. A few other staple pieces of mine are these high-rise distressed jeans, a feminine white top, and my aviators which happened to be my mom’s when she was in her teens. Speaking of my mom, she was the sweet one behind the camera this time, my parents came by last weekend and we went out for iced coffees, and sorbet for me, while we strolled through town. I always love having them stop by, specially when snacks are involved haha.

Mr. & Mrs. Alexander

Guys! I cannot believe that it’s been a year since we were married, how did it go by so quickly!? In honour of our first anniversary (which is on July 1st – I’m a day early) I am finally sharing some (a lot) of photos and details from our special day. There are so many wonderful people in our lives who all contributed to our wedding day in some special way, from Deanne my childhood friend, capturing this day, to our florist who has been a friend of both of our families since we were young doing our flowers, there were so many people in our lives who came together to make this day so wonderful. Thank you all!

The morning of  our wedding we woke up at my parents place, walked downstairs, and looked outside to see it pouring rain. Bummer. I sat down at the kitchen table and fought back the tears. We had a beautiful backup plan for rain, but it wasn’t the outdoor wedding vision I had in my head. My sweet mom quickly cheered me up and things quickly got better from there, though the rain didn’t quit. I met all my bridesmaids at Blo Dry Bar to get our hair and makeup done. The ladies there opened up the shop just for us since it was a holiday, those girls are so great! Throughout our time getting our hair and makeup done I was on the phone with my dad and the staff at the venue going back and fourth on whether to set up the backup plan or not. I kept insisting they get it ready, they kept insisting that the radar showed that the storm would pass in time for our ceremony. Throughout our time at the salon I made the best of it and soaked in my time with those fun girls. The best advice I have for brides is that the only thing you can control on your wedding day is your attitude. It might be pouring rain, your phone may be ringing off the hook, people might not like their dress or their hair, or whatever else could come up that day, but truly you can’t really do anything on the day of to change things so don’t stress about it. Plan for the worst, hope for the best, and let the rest just roll off your back.

Once we were all done up we headed back to my parents place, rain still pouring. We all had tacos for lunch before getting dressed – because of course we had tacos! The rain parted for a bit while so we got into our robes and ran out for a champagne toast, then quickly ran back inside when the rain started up again. Once we all got into our dresses the rain parted again, so back out for photos we went. As we were out in my parents back yard the skies cleared completely and the sun came out. They were right.

Pulling up to the venue I was still surprisingly calm, and very happy of course. The staff at Piper’s Heath had golf carts waiting for us ladies to bring us down to the ceremony space, while the guys were waiting down there. It was so exciting to watch all my girlfriends going down the aisle, knowing I would be seeing Josh soon. As soon as I rounded the corner and saw Josh we had the biggest smiles on our faces, I managed to keep the tears down until reading my vows.

Josh really wanted to write our own vows, he said that he’s the good talker in the relationship and he was going to show me up with his vows (or something to that effect). Being as competitive as I am, I had to show him up and write some amazing vows. His were pretty great too.

We exited the ceremony to “The Best Thing” by Relient K and quickly started in on photos with our families and friends. One of the selling points of this venue is that they bring out food and drinks to you and your bridal party while taking photos. It was the best! After photos it was time to party! We had the most amazing time dancing the night away with our friends and family! Scroll down to see more details about our wedding day.

I saved up for these shoes for months. When I worked in downtown Toronto I would pop into David’s shoes at Bloor and Bay at least once a week to make sure they were still there. By the time I had enough money saved up they had gone on sale and I snagged the only pair left in Canada. Talk about meant to be!

Lately I’ve been obsessed with feminine details like these ruffle sleeves and pastel pinks. Though I do like getting dressed up in girly garb head to toe, I love to add a little edge to my more feminine pieces, like these ultra comfortable distressed denim shorts.

Naturally Healthy Skin

When Thursday Plantation reached out to share some of their products for Acne Awareness Month, I was curious to see if it would have much of an affect on my skin. *Prepare your eye roll* I have been lucky enough to have a mostly clear face for a number of years now – as long as I eat cleanly –  so I really wasn’t sure if I would have much to say about their products and how effective they are at clearing acne.

Thursday Plantation-1.jpg

I was very pleasantly surprised with the results, after the first few days that is. I was chatting with my coworker about the products and found out that she was also using them to clear her skin. We both found that the first couple days made our skin seem worse, then once all that bad stuff got to the surface and cleaned out things got much better. I was shocked by how much I really had hiding under those pores I thought were so small and clean and am sure glad that I had a chance to test out these products and give my skin the proper cleaning it needed! I was also a little surprised by how much my face felt like it was tingling, especially when using the medicated gel for acne.

Thursday Plantation-3.jpg

One of the great things about Thursday Plantation is how affordable, and readily available, their products are. You can find them at Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, Walmart, and online. In addition to their acne treatment products they also carry body and hair care products, and essential oils. As I work toward eliminating the chemical heavy products in our home – such as soaps and shampoos – I will be stocking up on more products from Thursday Plantation.

I have to take a minute to tell you about how amazing and comfortable these pants are! I snagged these pants a couple weeks back and I will definitely be picking more up soon. They are so incredibly comfortable and fit perfectly, it feels like I’m wearing yoga pants! I love that this look is so comfortable and professional, while still fun enough to take me through to a night out with my girlfriends.

This past weekend was the start of the Milton Farmers Market, a time of year I look forward to most. I woke up bright and early Saturday morning and joined a girlfriend at the market to pick up whatever sparked our interest, which mostly included bacon, cupcakes, and berries. After a couple weeks of a lot cold rainy weather, it was so refreshing to feel the sun on our skin and actually be able to get out and enjoy our surroundings a bit. My weather app kept saying that it was going to rain on and off during the afternoon so I quickly got ready after Barre class (which was essential after the bacon on a bun I ate at the market) to head out and get some photos before the rain came in. Our timing couldn’t have been better that day, there were sun showers on and off throughout the afternoon and we managed to miss every one of them!

I have been anxiously waiting to wear this top since I picked it up a couple months ago. I have been totally obsessed with off-the-shoulder tops this spring, as well as this blush colour. I am sure you will be seeing this top on repeat this summer because I can’t get enough of it!

If you watch my Instastories you would know that I am obsessed with Mexican food, I could truly eat that breakfast, lunch, and dinner and not get sick of it. In fact, when we went to Mexico a couple years back, I did just that.

…side bar for a second – I am writing this post with one hand because my dog Odin in demanding I rub his belly right now and keeps putting his paw on my hand to pull it back when I try to stop…

Last weekend Josh and I went to Mississauga to see our families and celebrate my father-in-law`s birthday. On our way there, we drove past a new restaurant on called El Mariachi Tacos and Churros. I may have begged, to no avail, Josh to take us on a taco detour. I cannot wait to try this place out! I had a few friends send messages saying they had heard nothing but good things, and the reviews I am read are all good so I am beyond excited to try it out. With Cinco de Mayo coming up next Friday, it`s the perfect time to put on a fun outfit like this one and head out to indulge in mass amounts of Mexican food and one, or three, margaritas – who`s with me!?
