I just finished watching Mad Men this week and I have definitely noticed the show starting to influence my style. It always amazes me to see how perfectly coiffed the ladies in the show are. I know it’s television, but I am always saying to Josh how much I admire how put together those ladies are – I’m lucky if I leave myself enough time to put makeup on in the morning. Instead of upping my makeup game, I decided to class up my office outfit with a simple pencil skirt and some pumps.

Overall Obsessed

When I noticed overalls were on trend, I wasn’t so sure how I felt about them. As a child I had a few pairs and, though I wore them all the time, looking back I didn’t think they were all that flattering on me. After seeing so many photos on Instagram of ladies rocking their overalls, I decided to pull the trigger on a pair of my own. It took a little convincing from my bestie before I decided to give them a try with a few different outfits, and now I am hooked! I’m pretty sure I am going to be rocking these many more times.

Classics With A Twist

Zara Pearl Detail Turtleneck | Zara Blush Faux Leather Skirt | Madewell Black Booties | SheIn Black Quilted Purse | Missguided Blush Fedora | Le Specs Caliente Sunglasses

While I love a good floral print, or vibrant outfit, the classics will always hold strong in my wardrobe. So when I find classic pieces with a fun twist I’m sold! I recently took a trip to Zara and fell in love with this skirt and turtleneck. I love the pearl detailing on the turtleneck and the blush tone of the skirt! They’re such perfect pieces that take me from the office to date night and into the weekend.

Tips for Refreshing Your Wardrobe

Shop my closet

Closet clean-out

  • As each season comes around I like to go through and clear out pieces I haven’t worn in the last year. This year I took it one step further and cleared out anything that I didn’t love or feel excited about keeping. Clearing out those pieces that just take up space is always so freeing and helps you take stock of what you have, and what you need.

Sell Your Unwanted Pieces

  • Stores like Platos Closet and Style Encore are great options for selling your unwanted pieces. You won’t get a ton of money for your used items, but they will give you cash on the spot and it’s an easy way to get rid of those pieces that were taking up unwanted space. If you have more work-wear pieces, Style Encore is your best bet. Platos Closet is best for pieces from Forever 21, Abercrombie, H&M etc.
  • If you have higher end pieces, consignment shops are likely your best bet. My favourite shop is The Way We Were in Georgetown.
  • If you’re not into selling in person, there are many great online options. DePop, Instagram pages, or Facebook Buy and Sell Groups are some great options, aside from the classics like Kijiji and Ebay.

Use what you already have

  • Once you have cleaned out your closet, go back through and pull out some of your staple pieces, as well as a few favourites from last year. Use those pieces as the base to build your wardrobe.

Stick with a colour palette

  • To get more wear out of your wardrobe, or be able to pack for a week or more in a carry on, stick with a colour palette. Keeping with a consistent colour scheme will allow you to easily mix and match pieces, make more outfits, and stretch your wardrobe further. Mixing and matching pieces will give you the option to take a dozen pieces into a few dozen outfits.

  • A few simple accessories will easily spice up a simple outfit and can take any look from day to night with a quick change.

My Favourite Floral

Have you ever slipped on a piece of clothing and just felt like everything about it is perfect? For me, this dress is that piece.

A little background on this dress. A few months back one of my best friends introduced me to The Dressery Boutique, which lead to many night of us swooning over pieces on their site, glass of wine in hand. This girlfriend of mine picked up some pieces from the shop and I was always so impressed by the quality of everything she picked up. I had been stalking the site for a while in hopes of snagging a perfect spring dress and was so happy I spotted this one as soon as it launched! This dress feels like butter. Seriously, it’s perfect! The first time I put it on I didn’t want to take it off, and can’t wait to take it on an upcoming trip – the material won’t wrinkle in your suitcase.

I’ve also got my eye on this skirt, this dress, and this top, for my upcoming travels. If you’ve got your eye on anything from The Dressery, you can get it 10% off with code THEEMALEXANDER10. Happy shopping 🙂

Spring Refresh

How to Wear Overalls-1.jpg

Now that Spring has made it’s grand return, I am preparing for the warmer days ahead by refreshing my daily routine – mostly by starting each day with a fresh, healthy, meal. In the winter months I mostly eat avocado toast for breakfast. It’s an almost daily occurrence. Other days I might switch it up with some oatmeal, but truly I am very boring with my meals during the fall and winter months.

Once spring and summer roll around, I like to have something fresher and lighter to start my day – and I get a smidge more creative. Today I am sharing a few of my favourite quick and easy vegan** breakfasts that I love to keep in rotation.

First up, smoothies.

One of my favourite quick and easy breakfasts on the go is a berry smoothie. The one I have in this post is from my favourite smoothie and juice shop, Fresh Addicts, though most days I make one for myself and bring it with me to work in a mason jar.

I make my morning smoothie with:

1 banana

1 cup frozen mixed berries

1/2 cup soy or coconut milk

1 tbs hemp hearts

1 tsp coconut oil

I am by no means a nutritionist, though I have had some who have recommended a few things to me when it comes to having smoothies in the morning. Having blended fruit in the morning can spike your blood sugar, which is why I add the hemp hearts and coconut oil to my smoothie. Having these healthy fats slows down how quickly your body processes those sugars, meaning less of a chance of spiking your blood sugar then crashing shortly after.

Acai Bowl-1.jpg

Acai bowls are another one of my morning favourites. I tend to have these on the weekends since I tend to spill on myself half the time I eat a smoothie bowl. When we get them from a restaurant I find they are much thicker so I don’t tend to make such a mess, though they are much more expensive.

When making them at home I use:

1 Acai packet from Sambazon

1 banana

1/4 cup coconut milk

I then top my Acai bowls with fresh berries, banana, granola, and coconut chips

Vegan Yoghurt Parfait-10.jpg

The breakfast I’ve eaten the past two mornings are this vegan yogurt parfait.

I use:

1/2 cup Silk vegan coconut yoghurt

1/4 cup frozen wild blueberries

1/4 cup granola

I also top this with a small handful of coconut chips

I love these light, refreshing, and easy to make vegan breakfast to renew my daily routine and get me into the swing of springtime. If you have any easy vegan (and nut free) breakfasts you enjoy, I would love to hear them!

** I’m not vegan, though I try to mostly eat plant based since I have a dairy allergy
