Happy Friday, a long weekend Friday at that! Can I get a whohoo!? It is also the beginning on September, which means that fall is coming (insert Game of Thrones Pumpkin Spice Meme here). It is still pretty stinking hot here during the days, but cools off pretty quickly as the sun goes down. The daily swing in temperature has me reaching for a lightweight blazer or jacket to pop over my outfit for our evening outings with Odin. This evening I picked this relaxed olive blazer from H&M (under $40!). It works perfectly paired with a relaxed look, like this one, or dressed up with dark denim, a leopard print blouse, and some black pumps for a polished casual Friday look. You could also swap that blouse for a lace-detail cami for a date-night look. Basically, what I’m getting at here folks, is this jacket is perfect for fall transition outfits and you need it in your life. Get it, you’ll thank me later.

Hawaiian Luau in a Floral Dress

Since we only had one full day in Oahu, I booked us a late inter-island flight over to the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island), where we spent the majority of our Honeymoon. We had a list of things we knew we wanted to do while on the Big Island, including Volcano City, Black Sand Beach, the Waterfalls, and a Luau. When we booked with the Waikoloa Beach Mariott Resort & Spa we checked out some of the events listed on their website and noticed a sunset Luau is offered every Monday and Wednesday – reserve online in advance, they fill up quickly.

We checked in on Tuesday evening and headed down to the Hawaii Calls Restaurant & Lounge to enjoy our complementary sparkling wine and the daily special, lobster! One of the things we loved most about the resort is that there are lots of daily activities included in the resort fee, and they have great daily specials at the restaurants!

We spent Wednesday at the shops and restaurants across the street (another bonus!), then making Lei’s, one of the activities offered in the resort fee, and relaxing by the beach until it was time to get ready for the Luau.

Both of us were blown away by how gorgeous the resort grounds are, especially at sunset. The Luau took place overlooking the beach and fish ponds, it was stunning! The food and show at the Sunset Luau didn’t disappoint either, and it was certainly worth the cost. You may be able to spot my food baby in some of these photos haha. I usually try to just eat until I am satisfied, as that is how I was raised. My father would always say something along the lines of “if you’re full it’s going to waste either way” or “let it go to waste, rather than your waist” to encourage us to just eat until we were no longer hungry, not until our plates were clear or our stomachs stuffed, but that’s another post for another day. What I am getting at is the food here was the-bomb-dot-com (don’t google that) and I totally forgot my upbringing for a hot minute.

I wore this floral off-the-shoulder dress, which fit in perfectly with the evening, and Josh wore his new green Banana Republic shorts, which I had to force him to try on, and this checkered shirt, also from BR. We both wore our Lei’s from the class earlier in the day 🙂 It may not be the total authentic Luau experience Gabrielle Iglesias speaks of (who else loves this guy!?) in his Aloha Fluffy performance, but it was definitely fun and worthwhile!

Picnic in the Park

One of my favourite places to visit during the summer is Gairloch Gardens in Oakville. When you initially enter Gairloch Gardens, from the parking lot, it seems fairly unassuming, but as you get closer to the lake and catch a view of the flower gardens, gallery, and lake, you realize why this is such a popular spot.

Picnic set up

A couple weeks ago, we packed up a basket, grabbed a blanket, and headed to the gardens for a picnic lunch before heading downtown for the Oakville Jazz Festival. One of the many reasons I love the gardens so much is that you can often find bridal parties taking photos there on the weekends. On this particular day, there were two sets of bridal parties taking photos, one of which asked if they could use our picnic set up.

For our picnic we did’t want to bring anything too heavy, since it was a very hot and sunny day, so we packed some cheese, meat, and crackers, along with fresh fruits and fresh cupcakes from Hillary’s, from the Milton Farmers Market. It was so nice to sit, relax, and enjoy the view from the shade. We also squeezed in a bit of people watching and cheering on the bridal parties!

I threw on this fun floral printed dress from Anthropologie, which I also wore to my Bridesmaid Brunch. I picked this dress because from the moment I saw it, I  couldn’t get the image of an elegant garden party out of my head. I love finding pieces like this dress, pieces that bring out inspiration, or a new creative idea. Though this picnic wasn’t quite the elegant garden party that the Oakville Gallery is hosting next month, I still loved wearing this and twirling around in the gardens all afternoon.

After our picnic, we packed up and toured around the gardens, and outside of the gallery. I have been here a number of times, and I am always blown away by the beauty of the gardens and landscaping, it’s such a great place to spend a couple hours and enjoy a picnic, or sitting down by the water.

Striped Maxi Dress

Maxi dresses have been my jam lately! There has been a major heatwave in Toronto this past week which led to me reaching for light and breezy outfits every day this week. One of my favourite outfits from this week is this striped maxi dress that I found at The Bay. My best friend wore this dress to my rehearsal dinner, where myself and the rest of the bridesmaids were swooning over it all night. When I spotted this dress on sale I had to snag one for myself! I love how effortless and comfortable maxi dresses are – one piece and you’re good to go. Every Saturday morning I wake up and throw on a dress before heading out for a walk with Odin, or going to the Farmers Market.

If you’re in the market for a dress, or three, this is the time to buy since there are a ton of great dresses on sale at The Bay, ASOS, Nordstom and more. I know it may seem like a bad time to be buying summer dresses, but this is when you can discover the best deals. Plus, you can easily transition a maxi dress into fall, and get more wear out of it, by swapping your sandals for booties (under $100 & on my fall wishlist *insert heart eyes emoji*!) and throwing on a cozy pull over (under $40) or denim jacket (under $52).

White Pineapple Blouse

One of my summer staples is a white top, paired with denim and a little leopard print – my favourite! I found this white top at Anthropologie last spring I fell in love! It is feminine, fun, light & airy, plus anything with a pineapple print is good in my books. This particular print isn’t available this year, but there is a super cute lemon version available right now! Trust me, you will wear this time and time again this summer, and next!

I wore this outfit out to get fro-yo and walk by the lake with our puppy, Odin – below. He’s a seven month old mix and is a total goofball. We got Odin from a rescue organization in London, ON, when we knew our time with our foster dog, Morris, was starting to come to an end. We think he’s part German Shepherd, Rottweiler, and maybe some Husky and Lab; basically he’s going to be a giant and he’s a total lovey-dovey suck. You’ll be seeing more of him in future posts as we work further socializing him and working leash manners.

Farmers Market Finds

One of the things I love about the summer and fall months is the shopping at local farmers markets – and the flower market! This past weekend we met up with my girlfriend at the Milton market to do some shopping, and shop we did!

It was a bit cool and rainy when we arrived, so we stopped in at Hen & Roost to pick up some coffee before heading down to Main Street to see what the vendors had in stock this week. We were quickly distracted by Hillary’s Cupcakes, because who doesn’t want to eat cake for breakfast!?, then headed into Muse Studio & Market to visit the adorable owner, Lena, and inquire about her upcoming Creative Studio events calendar, but more on that in a later post :). With cake in our bellies and coffee in hand, we made our way through the booths to pick out our groceries. Josh and I didn’t have a ton on our list, but by the end we all had arms full of food, including a blueberry pie for Josh from Springridge Farms, and quesadillas with guacamole & salsa from 50 Pesos for me!

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, check out your local market – it will be a beautiful weekend for it! If you want more information about the Halton region farmers markets, the full list can be found here.

15 Under $50

As a girl on a budget, who also loves fashion, I am always on the hunt for inexpensive pieces that are stylish and can transition through the seasons. I scoured the web to find 15 pieces under $50 that can take you from summer to fall. I have compiled my finds into four different outfits, though you could easily switch out some of these pieces to create more outfits. All the items are linked below, with the price listed next them. Almost everything is actually $40 or less, but those brown booties are worth the little splurge because before you know it you’ll be wearing those bad boys daily.

Floral off-the-shoulder

During the last leg of our trip we stayed at Hotel Wailea  on Maui. It was stunning, but more on that in a later post.  On our first night in Wailea, we stopped in for dinner at Tommy Bahamas  at the Shops at Wailea , I had the Blue Lump Crab & Avocado Salad and would highly recommend it.

After dinner we looked through some of the shops, which is where I found this floral off-the-shoulder top.  I am a big fan of this year’s off-the-shoulder trend and I had my eye on a romper in that same print, so when I found this top I was thrilled. Here, I paired it with classic white denim shorts and jeweled sandals for a casual look while we explored the Wailea beach one afternoon.

Embroidered White Dress

Dress: Mahina | Wedge Sandals: Katie & Kelly | Purse: Rebecca Minkoff

I have been going through our honeymoon photos this week and reminiscing about the wonderful time we had. We spent the majority of our time in Hawaii on the Island of Hawaii, affectionately known as The Big Island. While there, we stayed at the Waikoloa Beach Mariott Resort & Spa. We flew in through the Kona Airport, hopped in a cab and headed to the hotel. En route to the hotel I was blown away by the unique topography, there was so much  barren land on either side of us. As we drove along I was a little nervous that the lush tropical hotel I thought I had booked for us was a figment of  my imagination, then off in the distance, along the shoreline, I spotted a rows upon rows of palm trees and floral gardens.

The Waikoloa Mariott is situated within the Waikoloa Beach Village, just across the street from the Kings Shops & Queens Market. Having the shops right down the road proved to be very helpful. On our second day we walked through both shopping centers, I was on the hunt for something beachy, feminine, and unique. As we strolled through, I spotted Mahina and exclaimed “that’s what I have been looking for!” . This shop will chock full of girly prints and silhouettes, with a little added sass/edge – exactly what I had in mind!

Initially I wasn’t 100% sold on this dress, but it was one of those items that I couldn’t get out of my head so we headed back that night to pick it up, and I am so happy I did! Though it may not be the most versatile piece, I know this will be a piece in my closet I reach for time and time again. I love the embroidered detail and fit of the top, along with the cut out in the back and feel of the fabric. I wore this to dinner on our last night on the Island of Hawaii. We walked down to Tropics Ale House and enjoyed some incredible fresh fish and craft cocktails. If you stay in Waikoloa Village, be sure to add that to your restaurants list.
